Hear the story of the Women’s Land Army (WLA), from its humble origins in WWI to its re-establishment to help the war effort in 1939, and then to its ultimate disbanding in 1950.

The Land Girls and Lumber Jills were instrumental in supporting landowners and farmers to provide food and produce timber for Britain throughout the wars and the post-war period. However, of the 80,000 veterans, very few still survive and the need to record and share their stories is pressing.

Richard Godley, Project Coordinator for the WEA ‘Women on the Land’ Project, will also bring some of his own personal favorite items from his extensive collection of memorabilia relating to the WLA and Timber Corps to look at after the talk.

This talk is in collaboration with the WEA. The WEA has received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £97,500 for an exciting heritage project, Women on the Land, in South Yorkshire. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on the work and lives of members of the Women’s Land Army (the ‘Land Girls’) and Women’s Timber Corps (or ‘Lumber Jills’) in the area during and after the second world war, and the impact they had in local communities.

The two-year project will run until August 2023, providing opportunities for people in South Yorkshire to collect the memories of these women and those who remember them to create a multi-media archive of memories to share with local communities and record for future generations. Participants will work with experts in heritage to develop a wide range of skills including research, oral recording and digital skills.
