Ancient Egypt

From pharaohs and pyramids to mummies and myths, explore the wonders of Ancient Egypt in our brand-new gallery at Weston Park Museum.

Learn all about life (and the afterlife) of one of history’s most fascinating civilisations through over 300 objects. See two ornate coffins, containing the mummies of Nesitanebetasheru and Djedma'atiuesank, a limestone ‘listening ear’, which would have been used by its owner to talk to the gods, an ornately-crafted copper and ivory dagger dating from 1950-1550 BC and a book of delicate embroidered and woven textile fragments, and more.

The new displays also look at how these objects came to be in the city and the approach to collecting material from other countries and cultures at the time.

As always, there is plenty for our littlest visitors to discover, including a new ‘build a pyramid’ interactive, fun dressing up, and a story corner.

Join us for the launch of the new gallery with a whole week of free, Egypt-inspired Half Term family activities from Sat 15 - Sun 23 Feb. Find out more

Ancient Egypt is the first of two new galleries opening Weston Park Museum in 2020. The second, Sheffield Stories, will make its debut in March and is set to celebrate the very best thing about Sheffield – its people. The new galleries have been made possible thanks to generous support from the DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, the Earl Fitzwilliam Trust, the Foyle Foundation, the JG Graves Charitable Trust, Charles Hayward Foundation, Sheffield Town Trust, the Museums Sheffield Friends and visitors to the museum.
