Artist Tina Ramos Ekongo will guide participants of any level of experience through the process of creating a portrait, from sketching the facial features to painting a finished image in acrylic.

You’ll learn to draw and paint portraits of people from different cultural backgrounds. You will then create a self-portrait using Tina Ramos Ekongo’s signature technique of acrylic on cardboard and a limited palette of colours – regardless of the colour of your skin.

This workshop will be a comfortable environment to explore diversity in portraiture, where the group will discuss issues around colourism, race, hair, and portrayal of people of colour in the media, as well as your own personal experience.

All materials are provided but please bring a photo of yourself to the session.

Tina Ramos Ekongo is an Equatorial Guinean painter and illustrator who lives and works in Manchester. After studying at the Escuela de Artes (School of Art) in Zaragoza, Spain, and the Escuela Superior de Diseño (School of Design) in Valencia, Spain, she attended the post-graduate programme in International Marketing at Sheffield Hallam University.

Tina Ramos Ekongo's work is mainly tribal and vibrant, exploring her African heritage. The main character of her work is the African women from the continent and the diaspora; in this way Ekongo’s work is trying to give them back their lost identity. Her work reflects in a powerful statement the strength of the African women by capturing the essence of their fearless spirit and poetically expressing the issues these women are facing every day.

This workshop is part of the programme of events complementing the exhibition Creative Connections Sheffield, at Millennium Gallery until Sunday 2nd October. It showcases portraits of people connected to Sheffield – from pioneers and performers to athletes and artists – presenting works from the National Portrait Gallery and Sheffield’s own collections.
