Cecil Beaton (1904-80) was a self-creation. Through the art of photography he rose to become one of the great observers of the Twentieth Century.  He also became a designer of costumes and sets for stage, screen, opera and ballet, an artist, a wicked diarist, an arbiter of taste, and a man who moved easily in many varied worlds.  As such he captured the passing moment and portrayed the great figures of the age in photographic and pen portraits.  In this online evening talk, Hugo Vickers, his biographer and literary executor, will explain how Cecil turned himself into this extraordinary figure.

This online talk is part of the programme of events complementing the exhibition, Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things, which is open at the Millennium Gallery, Sheffield until Sunday 4 July.

Hugo Vickers is a well-known biographer of Twentieth Century figures including Cecil Beaton, Vivien Leigh, the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Andrew of Greece and the Queen Mother. He was appointed as authorised biographer by Cecil Beaton himself in 1979. The resulting biography was published in 1985 and was reissued in 2020. He has also produced two volumes of unexpurgated diaries, and Cecil Beaton - Portraits and Profiles and has served as his Literary Executor since 1987. He has lectured about Cecil Beaton all over the world.  In May this year he published his diaries of researching the biography - under the title of Malice in Wonderland.

An acknowledged expert on the Royal Family, Hugo is called upon to commentate on important state occasions, and at times when the Royal Family are in the news.  The Financial Times recently described him as: ‘the most knowledgeable royal biographer on the planet.’ He is a Deputy Lieutenant for Berkshire and Captain of the Lay Stewards of St George’s Chapel, having now served as a Lay Steward for over 50 years.
