Several of the artists in the exhibition Earthbound: Contemporary Landscape from the Roberts Institute of Art engage with familiar ideas of the sublime and picturesque, and take as their subject the kind of scenic landscape we might associate with National Parks and tourist destinations. But these subjects are now approached, for the most part, in sceptical, sometimes even mocking, terms. Why has it become so difficult for artists to respond to landscape in traditional ways? Is it still possible to envisage a contemporary landscape sublime?
