Narcisse Chaillou, Le Dépeceur de rats (A Rat Seller during the Siege of Paris), 1871.

Tune in to our Facebook page on Wed 25 Nov for the next Virtual Tour!

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the terrible siege of Paris in the winter of 1870.

Hear from the University of Sheffield’s Dr David McCallam as he examines Narcisse Chaillou’s curious artwork Le Dépeceur de rats (A Rat Seller during the Siege of Paris) from 1871. The painting, part of Sheffield’s visual art collection, depicts a young cook skinning and selling rats for meat during the Prussian siege of Paris, a time when starvation was rife. Learn more about this fascinating artwork and find out more about how it relates to famines in French culture, and highlights the enduring role of rats in the French political imagination.

The painting in the city’s collection is the only version of this artwork held in the UK, with the two other versions held in collections in Paris.

Visit our Facebook Live page at 1pm on Thu 25 Nov to watch the talk in full.
