Join us for an afternoon of activities, talks, music and performance as we celebrate 175 years of a true Sheffield pioneer.

Edward Carpenter was a socialist, vegetarian and activist who campaigned for women’s rights, animal rights and environmental causes. Carpenter lived openly as a gay man with his partner, George Merrill, on the outskirts of Sheffield. His activism and influential writings laid the foundation for the gay liberation movement of the 20th century.

This summer marks 175 years since Edward Carpenter was born and the Friends of Edward Carpenter, Museums Sheffield and our Proud! project team are throwing a party to celebrate.

Join our compere, the amazing Christian Adore, to find out more about Carpenter’s incredible legacy, pop into Carpenter’s Commonwealth Café for a cuppa and a slice of birthday cake, and be the first to hear a very, very special announcement from the Friends of Edward Carpenter.
