John Holmes: Ruskin Cover

The Victorian age was defined by new industries, new technologies, new knowledge. John Ruskin hated the effects of industrialisation, but he admired science itself.

In this talk, John Holmes will explore how Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood sought to re-establish art on scientific principles. Encouraged by Ruskin and his writings on art, the Pre-Raphaelites replicated the precision and rigour of the sciences across their work, from painting to sculpture and even poetry. The Pre-Raphaelite project was even taken up by Victorian scientists themselves, as they sat for portraits and collaborated directly with Ruskin and his circle in building new museums to teach and celebrate modern science.
