Sheffield Town Hall © Brian Smith

Explore Sheffield in an exciting new context with our urban sketching workshop led by artist, prolific sketcher and experienced communicator, Brian Smith.

Urban sketching has increasingly become the popular pastime of everyday people and artists in towns and cities across the UK.  Wandering sketchers capture what they see in quick-fire drawings and paintings made on the spot.

In a structured all-day programme, the group will go out and explore the city, identifying the strategies and techniques which underpin successful urban sketching, such as choosing a subject, seeing objectively, simplifying information, line drawing, adding value, principles of perspective, figures, representation techniques and lots more.

Open to both beginners and those looking to hone their skills.

Itinerary:

10.15 - 10.45am: Briefing at the Millennium Gallery and an overview of some principles of sketching in an urban context.

11am – 1pm: Field sketching in Sheffield City Centre.

1 - 1.45pm: Working lunch while exploring perspective principles (please note, lunch is not provided).

1.45 - 4pm: Field sketching in Sheffield City Centre.

4 - 4.30pm: Criticism, debrief and feedback in the Millennium Gallery.

All materials provided, but feel free to bring your own as well if you wish

This is an outdoor course which will involve walking between sites around Sheffield City Centre. Please dress appropriately and make our team aware of any access needs you may have when booking.
