Under the Sea

Plume Necklace by Jenny Llewellyn © the artist
Wednesday 25 January 2012 - Sunday 14 October 2012
This atmospheric exhibition aims to transport visitors into an alien realm under the ocean waves. Like many people, artists and designers are fascinated by the shapes and forms found in ocean plants and animals. The works on display here are all inspired by giants of the deep, jewel-like fishes and other weird and wonderful marine life.

Under the Sea includes natural history specimens and historic art fromSheffield’s collections alongside contemporary works of art, craft and design. Visitors can help to crochet a coral to add to Britain’s ‘Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef’ or stand back and marvel at the skill and labour in a life-sized pencil drawing of a whale.

It is hard to believe that human actions on land could affect the vast oceans. But our pressure on the oceans is threatening not just the species we exploit for food but global mass extinctions. Under the Sea explores the beauty and importance of the oceans, their significance for our planet and what we as individuals can do to help protect them for the future.

Under the Sea has been created by Museums Sheffield.
