Chile 45 Years On: Images of the Military Coup, Dictatorship and Exile
On 11th of September 1973, the Chilean military, led by General Augusto Pinochet, overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in a bloody coup. During Pinochet's subsequent 17-year dictatorship, more than 3,000 people were murdered and disappeared, tens of thousands were arrested and tortured, and hundreds of thousands fled into exile. Many of these refugees arrived in Sheffield and made this city their second home.
On the 45th Anniversary of the coup, the Chilean community have organised a week long exhibition to commemorate the date.
Along with photographs and images depicting the military coup, the dictatorship, and artefacts made in concentration camps and in exile, there are selections of arpilleras (tapestries) on display.
Various activities will be taking place in the exhibition throughout the week.
