Learning Officer Anita Hamlin previews our holiday activities at Weston Park which will keep the whole family entertained this summer:
The summer holidays are well underway, and it’s been a busy couple of weeks for the learning team. As we get ready for Discovery Days and Get Creative sessions our desks are disappearing under a mountain of tissue paper, crayons and glue. We’ve been planning lots of fun creative sessions to keep everyone busy during the school break, as well as managing to fill up our diaries with school bookings for September.
Before we get to the new school year though, we’ve got lots of exciting happenings at Weston Park. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-4pm you can drop into our activity room and take part in our free Discover Day sessions- our informal creative sessions for all the family. Last week in one of our Discovery Day sessions visitors enjoyed making woolly mammoth finger puppets which were very cute and hairy. With our puppets’ help, we may have also worked out what kind of sound a woolly mammoth makes- imagine a cross between a sheep, a duck and an elephant and I think we are just about there!
We’ve also been busy with our Get Creative sessions which run on Wednesdays, 1.30 - 3.30pm throughout the summer holidays. Last week we survived the Ice Age by learning how to be hunter-gatherers. Watch out Spike the Woolly Rhino- we are hungry! We learned how people in the past could really make fire by rubbing sticks together too. Don’t worry we didn’t make real fire - we just imagined making Ice Age campfires.
Although we love our school workshops, this time of year is always very special as we get to explore creative ways of interpreting the collections and get to meet lots of lovely people who are always teaching us something new. We’ve got loads of great sessions coming up throughout August- why not join us for our Get Creative session on the 12th August to make a bird mobile inspired by our Over South Yorkshire Skylines display, or pop along on the 19th August to learn more about our Japanese wedding doll collection and make your own Japanese-style peg doll to take home?
