Join the UK’s first ever Age of Love Cafe where people aged 60 and older can gather to eat cake, drink tea, and talk about relationships and intimacy.

Relationships are a central part of life, and one of the most important is the one we have with our intimate other. However intimacy and ageing are rarely talked about. The objective of the Age of Love Cafe is to tackle the taboo. A visit to the Age of Love exhibition, with artwork by Pete McKee, will start the conversation. The exhibition is a story about love and intimacy. Café participants are invited to view the exhibition and then attend the café in a private room in the gallery.

The sessions have been developed by Dr Sharron Hinchliff, an academic based The University of Sheffield. For the past 17 years, Dr Hinchliff has researched intimate relationships in people in older adulthood. She says: “It can be difficult to talk about intimates aspects of a relationship because it’s a private topic. There is a silence around these issues connected with older age. I’m looking to address that.”

The Cafe is a discussion group where conversations are led by the participants with no agenda or objectives. It is split into small groups, and each participant is free to join the conversation, steer the conversation where it feels natural to go, or to just listen. Conversations are treated in confidence, and participants are respectful and considerate to others. The Cafe is not a counselling session, and it does not involve relationship support.

The 11am café is open to anyone over 60 who identifies as male, and the 2pm session is open to anyone over 60 who identifies as female.

The event is free to all who attend, you do not have to provide your real name. All conversations are confidential.

Tea and cake provided free of charge.
