In an exciting new project, Museums Sheffield are collaborating with the University of Sheffield’s Concert Series and Dr Tim Shephard, an expert on relations between music and visual art, to animate four artworks in live performance.

Graves Gallery is home to four fascinating musical artworks. Two nineteenth-century masterpieces by William Turner and Edward Burne-Jones reflect music’s role in myth and story, and as a symbol of the passing of time. The structure of Kenneth Martin’s Chance Order Change 24 (1982) has been compared to compositional process among mid-twentieth century avant-garde composers. Ego Geometria Sum (The Piano Aged 9 Years) (1983), by Helen Chadwick, is a self-portrait in which the artist’s physical body is substituted by an upright piano.

Long-standing collaborators Jack McNeill (clarinet/bass clarinet) and the Gildas Quartet present a kaleidoscope of clarinet quintet repertoire, four short new University of Sheffield student works and the quintet's own arrangements, musical constructions and visceral sonic deconstructions!

First performance: 11:40am - 12.30pm
Second performance: 2 - 2.50pm
