Kelvin Flats, Sheffield 1978 © Linda Benedict-Jones

We are delighted to welcome American photographer and curator Linda Benedict-Jones back to Sheffield after forty years. Join us as she discusses making Quiet Places, a series of work that has recently become part of Sheffield’s collection and is currently on display in the Graves Gallery.

Benedict-Jones will share her insights into working as photographer in Europe in the 1970s, when she photographed a number of cities and towns, including Sheffield. What emerged was a powerful series of black and white images exploring themes of presence and absence in urban and rural spaces. She said: “I started making lyrical images of places that reached out to me, that spoke to me gently, that appeared poetic in a visual form that somehow mirrored my hopes and fears. These are loosely categorized as landscapes, but I think of them as quiet places that were personal for me.”
