Join Friend of Museums Sheffield, Robert Murray, for a talk about Christopher Wood (1901 – 1930) and his work Seated and Standing Nudes, currently on display in our exhibition Darkness into Light: The Emotional Power of Art.
Wood’s artistic career spanned some ten years until his untimely death at the age of 29. After his memorial exhibition in 1938, which attracted considerable attention, he was almost forgotten until the 1970s. Since then, his work has been critically re-examined in exhibitions and books. His glamorous life in 1920s Paris, his sexual relationships, opium consumption, and early death have been well-documented.
Wood’s work is recognised for its importance in the cross currents of artistic modernity, landscape, and notions of the ‘primitive’ in the interwar years.
