Elsie on Hassan by Laura Knight, 1929-30 by permission of Nottingham City Museums & Galleries

Discover the history of circus in Sheffield.

This illustrated talk by Professor Vanessa Toulmin, curator of Circus! Show of Shows and one of the UK’s foremost circus experts, starts in the 1830s with the purpose built amphitheatre, originally situated on the Cattle Market before moving to Duke Street, the Moor and Fargate.

In the 19th century the city welcomed legendary performers including Pablo Fanque, the Franconis and The Young Hernandez.

The talk also features Buffalo Bill, Barnum and Bailey, Billy Smarts, Bertram Mills and, in the 21st century, Zippos Circus.
