Join Nottingham University’s Professor Mark Rawlinson for a four week introduction to Histories of Art, inspired by Going Public: The Kirkland Collection.

This short course is designed for adult beginners with no previous experience required. The sessions will take an in depth look at Modern Art, using the Graves Gallery exhibition to spark debate, questions and learn about the complex ideas behind the collection.

Week 2: Abstraction

Walking through the Kirkland Collection, it is impossible to ignore the fact that these works of art are predominantly abstract. However, this description fails to account for the variety of abstraction on display. So how did different forms of abstraction emerge? What social, cultural, geographical or historical reasons exist to account for this diversity?
