When Charlotte Brontë died in 1855, most of her readers had no idea of what she looked like or even her name.
In 1857, Elizabeth Gaskell’s The Life of Charlotte Brontë made her name and face public. It included the only professional portrait of Charlotte taken from life – a sketch by George Richmond.
This illustrated talk looks at how the face of Charlotte Brontë has been adapted across its 167-year history and explores our fascination with her life and work.
