Eleven years ago British artist Ian Breakwell visited Bexhill-on-Sea’s De La Warr Pavilion. He was particularly struck by the tea dances frequently held on the terrace overlooking the sea and The Other Side was filmed as a result of these observations. Now Museums Sheffield is thrilled to present this romantic, melancholy reflection on life and mortality for re-screening in 2011.

Ian Breakwell (1943–2005) established an impressive international reputation throughout the second half of the 20th century for work encompassing painting, photography, film and collage. An avid diarist, Breakwell meticulously recorded what he saw and experienced - some of his entries are available to read online here.  In Breakwell's obituary, Jeremy Lewison of The Independent described him as 'a modern-day flâneur, a voyeur of the gutter rather than the keyhole, an observer of the minutiae of life'.  He is represented in various national and international collections, including those of Tate, V&A, the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. 

The Other Side forms part of Art in Yorkshire – supported by Tate, a year long celebration of art in galleries throughout Yorkshire in 2011 which sees major works from Tate on tour to our region.
