Going Public: International Art Collectors in Sheffield

Wednesday 16 September 2015 - Saturday 30 January 2016

It was once taken for granted that every major city in the UK should collect art for the benefit of its people. Many great collections, Sheffield’s included, were founded upon the philanthropic bequests of private collectors. Where are the philanthropists of the future, and what role do public galleries and private collections play in bringing great art to everyone?

To kick-start a debate, venues across Sheffield have partnered with major European art collectors to bring a programme of world class exhibitions and unique events to the city.

The Millennium Gallery hosts a range of works from the Nicolas Cattelain Collection by artists including Sol LeWitt, Do Ho Suh, Dan Flavin, Anthony McCall and more.

Rarely-seen works and archival material by Marcel Duchamp and his circle from the vast collection of Egidio Marzona form a focused exhibition at the Graves Gallery.

Installations by Jake and Dinos Chapman, Maurizio Cattelan, Fiona Tan, among other leading contemporary artists, are displayed throughout Sheffield Cathedral, drawn from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection.

Site Gallery and Sheffield Hallam University's SIA Gallery present an exhibition of work by leading contemporary Cantonese artists drawn from dslcollection. The exhibition explores how artists have been influenced by the legacy of the province and its rapid urbanisation over the last 20 years.

In addition to the exhibition programme, Sheffield Hallam University hosted a summit event on 12 October 2015 which brough together international art world figures to debate the role of private philanthropy for the arts in the 21st century.
