Planning a visit

Bishops' House is the best preserved timber–framed house in Sheffield and will amply reward any time detectives or treasure-hunters willing to seek it out.  Over 500 years old, the house is a living, breathing time capsule, where history seeps out of every wall and soot-stained fireplace.  Every year thousands of children discover what life was like in Tudor times in our popular Bishops’ House schools workshops.

Bishops' House was built around 1500 and is tucked away at the top of Meersbrook Park.  Inside, it retains many of its original features and looks just as it would have done in the 17th century, giving a tantalising flavour of Stuart England.  Read a history of the house to discover why it had nothing to do with Bishops!

Bishops’ House is a small, grade II* listed building so does not have a café. A small shop sells souvenirs and gifts.

The House is open Monday-Friday to pre-booked schools and groups only.
