Get Knitted
|
Millennium Gallery 2 July to 26 October 2008
Knit - to create fabric from parallel, inter-looped yarns;
to be united through common interests.
Get Knitted considers a variety of current British knitting practices, from fashion and interior design to contemporary art. The work featured looks at contemporary interpretations of local community traditions as well as emerging new craft communities and technologies.
Some artists and designers refer to the traditions of specific communities in different ways, tapping into romantic associations or making the traditional contemporary through innovation. Others explore social knitting as a way to create new communities, physical or virtual. These might be formed from knitters contributing to a campaign who never actually meet, or consist of people who share the experience of creating as part of a group.

Technically intricate pieces using hand, machine or computer aided design show the strength of British knitting design now. Featured designers push the possibilities of using the craft in luxurious and practical ways.
Knitting can be glamorous, risqué, charming and practical, socially engaged, even funny. It has many potential applications, from bobble hats to architecture and as this exhibition shows, it is here to stay.
