Education and Learning Outreach
|
Museums Sheffield aims to encourage as many different audiences as possible to enjoy and learn about our rich collections and exhibitions. We provide opportunities in both formal and informal learning for schools, community groups and individuals. We offer a wonderful and exciting resource for teachers, community educators, and for anyone interested in knowing more about their heritage and the world around them.
- We lead an exciting programme of curriculum focused activities for schools; tailor-made to enrich and support the national curriculum in an exciting, animated, and accessible way.
- We plan artist-led workshops to help children and their families explore and develop their creative skills.
- We provide opportunities to re-engage older users with our collections and exhibitions programme through our exciting adult learning programme.
- We take collections out to the local community to inspire learning, and share understanding and meaning.
- We develop new audiences by igniting the imagination of non-traditional audiences by developing truly pioneering projects, often using modern technology.

Schools Programme at Weston Park and Bishops' House
Museums Sheffield: Weston Park is home to the City's social and natural history collections. The schools offer at Weston Park consists of led workshops and self-guided trails linked to National Curriculum history units. Science workshops and trails will be launched as part of National Science Week in March 2007. From April 2007 planned activities include teacher INSET and previews of temporary exhibitions and work with initial teacher training students. There will also be teacher packs for each temporary exhibition and special workshops and events linked to these.
Bishops' House is a Tudor yeoman farmers house situated in Meersbrook Park. Workshops focus on the rich and poor in Tudor times, preparing for a visit with owner William Blythe, and during the autumn term, preparing for Christmas. All workshops are led by costumed history educators who deliver them in role. Bishops' House is also available for self-guided visits and resources are downloadable from our website.
The schools programme at Weston Park and Bishops' House centres on KS1 and KS2 work, however we are happy to support workshops outside this age range. Contact us if you wish to find out more.

Museums Sheffield runs an exciting and innovative events programme for schools, taking place in the Millennium Gallery and Graves Gallery. Alongside our core offer of workshops to primary and secondary schools based upon the needs of the national curriculum and our own collections, we also organize INSET events for teachers to accompany our special exhibitions. We host exclusive teacher preview evenings to cater for the needs of teachers. Teacher packs containing quality images and suggested activities are provided to accompany exhibitions and we also run specific artist-led workshops throughout the year.
The schools programme at the Millennium Gallery and Graves Gallery centres on KS3 work and above, however we are happy to support workshops outside this age range. If you are a teacher and wish to find out more about bringing a group, or attending an event, please contact us.

Visitor Support Staff generally meet school or group parties as they arrive; provide site orientation, tours and workshops. During visits they are available to answer questions to help schools or groups explore and understand hands-on, interactive exhibits and ensure a pleasant museum experience for all visitors.
Visitor Support Staff deliver sessions around the temporary exhibitions and Object Dialogue Box in the Millennium Gallery, Graves Gallery and Weston Park. They work closely with freelancers to deliver the core programme of artist-led workshops to schools; the Family Learning Coordinator to develop and deliver the half-term and holiday activities as well as the weekend Art Clubs and Art Cart; they also work with the Adult Learning Coordinator to lead tours booked by adult groups; and work with the Community Manager to plan and deliver community based activities, both in the community and in the galleries and museum.

Families
|
Museums Sheffield has a thriving family learning programme across all four of its sites. This programme takes many different forms from Discovery Time sessions at Weston Park, History Quest Trails at Bishops' House and Art Cart activities at the Millennium Gallery. The Graves Gallery and the Millennium Gallery host Saturday Art Club for 7 - 10 year olds and Art Plus for 11 - 14 year olds. There is also a range of book in advance and drop in events linking to our temporary and permanent galleries. These are frequently held in conjunction with national and local initiatives such as Family Learning Week, Showcomotion, Sheffield's Independent Showroom Cinemas International Children's Film Festival, and Museums and Galleries Month. See our What's On pages for details of current events.
The family learning programme is inspired by the temporary and permanent galleries and displays. Through the programme we aim to entertain and enrich the time spent by families visiting our museums. The activities aim to engage all members of the family from children and parents to grandparents and everyone else. The family learning programme also links with some of our funded projects inspired by national partnerships including the Victoria & Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery.

Museums Sheffield runs a lively life-long learning programme. We organise one off events, gallery talks and workshops for adults relating to the exhibitions.
We will also plan a series of learning opportunities relating to funding that we have obtained e.g. Create workshops for 16-18 year olds. We plan regular art classes and courses such as the life drawing classes and provide adult learning opportunities at Weston Park which include ESOL trails and family history courses.
We can also give advice and help in planning adult learner group visits.

Community Outreach
|
Museums Sheffield is well-known for its progressive and innovative community involvement work with the diverse communities that make-up Sheffield, through projects such as, Ourselves, Our Place www.ourselvesourplace.org.uk Burngreave Voices, Street Safari and Txt Manor. We provide a range of opportunities to get involved with our collections, exhibitions and displays for community groups and new audiences in disadvantaged neighbourhoods across Sheffield. Outreach work promotes inter-cultural and inter-generational exchange that enriches the life of the community and in turn enriches the culture of Museums Sheffield.
The community team works across three sites: Weston Park, Graves Gallery and Millennium Gallery. We organize short courses in the community, one-off workshops, oral history gathering, visits to our museums and public events for family and adult learners, children and young people. During the summer months, we go out on the road with the innovative Museum in the Sun. This showcases inspiring selections of treasured objects from our collections alongside hands-on creative arts and craft activities. Museum in the Sun has been a popular attraction at many of Sheffield's community festivals since 2004. The community team also supports strategic initiatives that employ culture as a tool for regeneration and community development. Outreach work is delivered in partnership with a range of community organisations and service providers.

National and Regional Partnerships
Museums Sheffield works in partnership with three national museums and galleries the National Portrait Gallery, Tate and the Victoria & Albert Museum. These National Regional Museum Partnership Education Programmes are funded by DCMS and DfES and give young people from hard-to reach areas the opportunity to explore national collections and to develop skills. Museum Sheffield's partnership work is now being expanded across the Yorkshire region through the Renaissance Partnerships scheme, where we will be working with Harewood House, Shandy Hall and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to engage audiences with our Visual Arts Collections.
In the past year our partnership project work has included artist residencies in schools, the development of web-based teaching resources, a linking schools project, INSET and CPD for teachers, a young peoples conference and displays of work by young people at the Millennium Gallery and at the V&A.
If your school or community group would be interested in participating in a similar project with us please contact us.
