Judging panel
The judging panellists have been selected for their wealth of experience in the metalwork field:
 
Ashley Carson
Ashley Carson was born in Sheffield and on leaving school in 1977 was employed by Sheffield Assay Office where he has recently completed 30 years of service.

Ashley achieved a wide knowledge of profession by working in most departments, eventually reaching management level and in 1993 he was appointed as Assay Master, the youngest ever.

Since becoming Assay Master he has helped to make Sheffield the second largest Assay Office in the country, currently hallmarking over 7 million articles a year. He has also encouraged the Assay Office in the sponsorship of young silversmiths and students at Sheffield Hallam and in 2003 was made an Honorary Doctor of Sheffield Hallam University.

Ashley is a Freeman of the Cutlers Company and currently sits on the British Hallmarking Council, the Association of European Assay Offices and the International Convention on Hallmarking and is the current Chairman of the International Convention Technical Committee. He is also a Director of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.
 
 

 
Corin Mellor
Born in Sheffield in 1966, Corin Mellor trained as a product designer at Kingston and worked for the London architects YRM before joining his father's business, David Mellor Design, where he is now Creative Director.

Corin has carried out a number of special design commissions. His public seating can be seen at the Lowry Gallery in Salford Quays, and the Millennium Gallery and Winter Garden in Sheffield. He has recently worked on projects for Sheffield Cathedral and Chatsworth House.

At David Mellor Design Corin is responsible for special product development within the company. He has designed new ranges of kitchen knives, table glass and woodware. Corin designed the interior of the new David Mellor Design Museum and Café at Hathersage.

He is married to the photographer Helen Mellor and divides his time between the factory and design office in Derbyshire and the Londonshop, David Mellor Sloane Square.
 
 

 
The Duke of Devonshire
The 12th Duke of Devonshire was Marquess of Hartington until May 2004 when he succeeded his father as Duke. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire have lived at Chatsworth since 2006, from where they manage all the family estates. Ever since their marriage, the Duke and Duchess have been enthusiastic collectors in several fields, especially modern British paintings, sculpture, silver and ceramics: their collection is mainly kept at Chatsworth, although there are a number of significant pieces from their sculpture collection in the gardens at Lismore Castle in Ireland.

The Duke was appointed a Trustee of Museums Sheffield in 2006, and was appointed a Trustee of both the Wallace Collection (in London) and the Storm King Art Centre (in New York) in 2007.

The Duke of Devonshire works with many charities and organisations both local to the Estates and nationally.
 
 

 
Rosy Greenlees
Rosy Greenlees is Executive Director of the Crafts Council, the national development agency for contemporary craft in the UK. Rosy joined the Crafts Council in 2006 following her role as Director of the London Centre for Arts and Cultural Enterprise. The LCACE is a collaboration of seven Higher Education Institutions that develop partnerships and exchanges of research and expertise with the cultural sector.

In her early career Rosy worked in independent arts centres and local authority galleries both as a curator and public art manager. She then became the Director of Visual and Media Art and Deputy Chief Executive at Eastern Arts Board before moving to the Greater London Authority to lead on the development of the Mayor’s Culture Strategy.
 
 

 
Cameron Maxfield
2008 Metalwork Design Award Winner

Cameron Maxfield was an Assistant Designer for Brian Asquith and a Senior Lecturer in the Metalwork and Jewellery Department at Sheffield Hallam University. He is a technical consultant for the Starter Studio Programme at Yorkshire Artspace Society. He has exhibited across the UK including at the Goldsmiths Company, the Millennium Gallery and the Cutlers Company.
 
 
Clare Starkie
Senior Curator of Humanities, Museums Sheffield.

Clare studied Prehistory, Medieval history and Archaeology and then Arts and Heritage Management at the University of Sheffield. She began her museums career at National Museums Liverpool working in the Antiquities Department and then cataloging a wide variety of African and North American material prior to the development of World Museum Liverpool.

She moved back to Sheffield in 2000 to work on a project to inventory the newly Designated Metalwork Collection. She current leads the Humanities department and acts as Curator of Decorative Art with responsibility for a wide variety of objects including metalwork, ceramics, glass and ivories.
