Introduction to the Award
|
Museums Sheffield manage one of the most important collections of decorative and domestic Metalwork in the country which has been classed as a Designated Collection by the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) in recognition of the collections national and historical significance. The collection is housed at the Millennium Gallery in the heart of Sheffield's City Centre and it exemplifies the city's rich cultural and historical association with the production of metal that dates as far back as the 14th Century. Comprising over 12,000 pieces, the collection and the objects on display in the Metalwork Gallery pay tribute to the skill and craftsmanship of past British metalworkers as well as highlighting the most contemporary cutting edge designs by new emerging talents.
In addition, Museums Sheffield is eagerly anticipating celebrating its 10 year anniversary as a trust in 2008 and considers that the launch of the Metalwork Design Award will not only help to celebrate this event but will emphasis the important role the production and design of metal has played in Museums Sheffield's and the city's heritage.
The focus of attention will be on the abundance of beautiful new metalwork being created by contemporary artists, designers and manufactures, both in Sheffield and across Britain and great emphasis will be placed on the ingenuity and originality by all those who work and produce with metals.

Aim of the Award
|
Through the launch of this biennial National Metalwork Award, Museums Sheffield aims to promote, support and celebrate innovation and excellence in craftsmanship for those working with metals. We seek to identify the highest standards of craftsmanship and cutting edge design from the most exciting contemporary talents working and living in the UK today and aim to encourage individuals to pursue a dynamic approach towards metalwork design and production.
The awards will provide an opportunity for 12 selected applicants to exhibit their works in the Millennium Gallery Avenue which receives over half a million visitors a year and is home to one of the most important Designated Metalwork Collections in the country. The overall winner of the Metalwork Design Award will receive the substantial sum of £10,000 to contribute towards personal projects and career development programmes.
