Building Characters: Portraits and caricatures across the curriculum
Our 'Building Characters' interactive learning resource uses portraits from the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and Museums Sheffield alongside caricatures by Gerald Scarfe, to explore the concepts of portraits and caricature within curriculum teaching.

'Building Characters' is an inspiring teaching resource, providing the opportunity to explore themes of identity and representation, both out of the classroom and at school. Selected works illustrate the way portraits are used to influence public image.

The website includes online tutorials, flashcards for classroom use, suggested activities and a forum where you can share ideas and see examples of other work.

Portraits can be a useful resource for many subjects, forming the basis for a discussion point or becoming a stimulus for extended practical projects. 'Building Characters' provides specific curriculum links for each Key Stage, covering areas of History, Citizenship and Art.

The website has been developed to accompany the Heroes & Villains exhibition at the Millennium Gallery, produced by Museums Sheffield in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, and is funded by the DCMS under the Strategic Commissioning Programme.
