Constable
A breath of fresh air

8 February to 27 April 2003

Constable Weymouth Bay © V&A
The Millennium Galleries is the sole venue for this new Constable exhibition, produced in partnership with Tate and the V&A. It re-examines this most popular of British artists, focusing on the innovative nature of his art and the vision he brought to British landscape painting.

Paintings, oil sketches, drawings and watercolours bring out what lies behind Constable's approach to nature, his love of his native countryside, his debt to past masters and, above all, his originality.

Notable works by Constable from other UK collections will be included, as well as others by his contemporaries and artists who inspired him.

The exhibition explores how he responded to the century's interest in science and the natural world, his working methods and the importance of place. Most of all, it makes us look at the artist through fresh eyes, beyond the familiar chocolate box images, to discover an exciting and original talent whose influence extended far and wide.
