Portrait Trail

Follow this trail to find out more about portraits and learn how the artist gives us 'clues' about the person painted (the sitter).

During this trail we will study the portrait of Elizabeth I, by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. We will look at her face, pose and costume, as well as the background of the picture.

We will also think about when the picture was painted. Some of the things that people thought and did at that time may seem strange to us today.

You can use what you learn to look at and enjoy other portraits.
