Big Give Christmas Challenge 2017

This festive season Museums Sheffield is taking part in the UK’s largest online match funding campaign with a new fundraising appeal aiming to raise £4,000 for a new project to enrich the lives of people living with dementia in Sheffield.

We’ll be working with Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust to deliver a series of Dementia Friendly Museum and Gallery Café events designed to support people living with dementia in the city and their carers. To tell you more about our plans and how you can support through the Big Give Christmas Challenge, here’s Maria Flude. Maria has delivered Dementia Friendly Cafés at Kelham Island Museum, and is a Director of the Sheffield Dementia Action Alliance.

"I’ve been very happy to be a part of the joint work with Museums Sheffield and Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust to support people with dementia. Using funds donated through the Big Give Christmas Challenge appeal, we will hold a series of Dementia Cafes in museums and galleries across the city. A Dementia Café is simply a space where people living with dementia and those who support them can come together with people in a similar situation. People can feel comfortable that they are with people who understand and can relax and enjoy a cuppa together. We feel we can really build on the traditional Dementia Café model as we can deliver them in a museum or gallery setting. We can offer creative activities or input from curatorial staff to provide a slice of culture along with the relaxed feel or just a “cup of tea and a chat.”

A number of pilot sessions we’ve held at Kelham Island Museum have been really well attended and we’ve had fantastic feedback so we want to build on this good work. Recently a large number of staff and volunteers from both Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust and Museums Sheffield have been trained to become Dementia Friends and so have developed their understanding and awareness of living with dementia. This means staff and volunteers are equipped to support people with dementia at our sites and provide assistance if needed.

We are proud of our museums in Sheffield and this important programme reaches out to people with dementia and their carers / family members as a valuable part of our audience. We want to learn from people and provide a space for people with dementia to contribute.

Please share this fundraising appeal far and wide and help to make Sheffield one of the first cities to hold Dementia Cafes across so many of its museums!"

Take part in The Big Give Christmas Challenge between 12noon on Tuesday 28 November and 12noon on Tuesday 5 December and see your donation doubled, thanks to our challenge partners, the Postcode Support Trust and city businesses Counter Context and Quality Context
