2016 marks Sheffield’s Year of Making - celebrating our past, present and future as a city of makers with an international reputation for excellence and innovation. Events Manager Tamar Millen gives a sneak peek into the programme of events:
Year of Making explores the theme of making in the widest sense – from making great theatre, music and art to making a life, your fortune, your future. Sheffield is home to industry large and small: from advanced manufacturing and international business to individual designer-makers.
Led by the Sheffield Culture Consortium with partners The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University the programme is supported by the Chamber of Commerce, Made in Sheffield, The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and Sheffield City Council. It will promote Sheffield’s leading role in the region, the North, nationally and internationally.
The programme is bursting with a great variety of events exploring making across five major themes – art and design, heritage and placemaking, film and literature, manufacturing and industry and music and performance.
The programme is jam packed with things to see and do - from the 24 hour Sheffield Makes Music day in partnership with BBC Makes Music to Ruskin’s Use and Beauty Parlour a pop-up parlour on the Moor in August, exhibitions to visit such as Museums Sheffield’s Made in Sheffield at the Millennium Gallery, theatre, dance and music performances including Computer Club x Algorave x Pimoroni a pioneering electronic music event and a brand new festival of creativity – Catalyst from Sheffield Hallam University.
We’ve also commissioned 13 new projects as part of our programme, ranging from the recent art exhibition in the electricity substation as part of Art Sheffield 2016 to a Maker Dome as part of the upcoming Hillsfest. We’ll also be putting a new call out for additional commissions in the summer too - look out for more information soon.
The programme is still growing and events are being added to the programme daily - check back on our website regularly or find us on social media to find out more.
If you are involved in an event that you think could be part of the Year of Making there is still time to include it in our programme. You could upload straight to the website yourself or if you want to chat it over first contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Make yourself part of it!
