Paul Morrison, Auctorum, opening next week

Paul Morrison’s first solo exhibition in Sheffield, Auctorum, opens at the Millennium Gallery next Thursday. We have been working with Paul, who lives in the city, for over two years to realise this exhibition and it’s been an ambitious project for him - and for Museums Sheffield. Auctorum is the largest solo show of his work seen in the UK and it’s looking amazing.

We've gone for a slightly different feel for this show - the gallery layout is much more open plan than for previous historic art sho, giving the work plenty of space and the visitor some dramatic sight lines. Also, watch out for his mobile being installed in the Avenue – its Paul’s first piece of hanging sculpture and it will literally dazzle visitors walking through the Millennium Gallery as it's covered in gold leaf.

Inside the exhibition you will see Paul’s trademark monochrome botanical landscapes, as well as lots of new work which brings in a more figurative element. Paul uses an eclectic mix of references in his work, from Renaissance art to album covers and Disney graphics. Some of the images he produces give you a sense of déjà vu as you recognise elements but can’t pinpoint where you have seen them before. On show are paintings, prints, sculptures and film, along with a specially commissioned, site-specific, 25 metre long wall painting!

It’s this large wall painting which has been the main focus in the days building up to the exhibition launch. Paul has completed many wall paintings previously, some of which have remained permanently. This is one of his largest and the process has been documented by time-lapse film-maker Richard Bolam. Richard's film captures the set up, progress and final drawing beautifully and you will be able to see this film on our website soon.

The exhibition really is spectacular and I’m sure it will be enjoyed by a wide-range of visitors. There’s a discovery trail from which you can explore some of the themes in Paul’s work and further information about the artist in our resource area. There will also be a selection of postcards and catalogues for sale in the shop.

Auctorum opens on Thursday 7 June.
